CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS + MODS: ONTD & Politics

So after passionately diving into creating a celebrity and pop culture community on DreamWidth as an ONTD alternative, life got in the way and interest in migrating from ONTD died down, especially with the popularity of daily political posts on ONTD, so I kind of stopped trying to make HDU happen. But even though I deleted my LJ account, I still lurk on ONTD and a comment on a post about Hillary Clinton's new book struck me. One of my ONTD faves, cameltoee, mentioned pitching an ONTD original post featuring the best excerpts from Hillary's new book. According to cameltoee, Brenden said no, because ONTD is trying to move away from politics.

Without context, this seems fairly innocuous — ONTD is a pop culture blog, after all. But considering the political climate, and the Russia connections that caused people to flee from LiveJournal and ONTD in the first place (and caused me to make HDU), this response leaves much to be desired — and at the risk of sounding dramatic, is somewhat troubling.

HDU's audience is still small-to-nonexistent. But consider this a call to everyone looking to build a new community to discuss pop culture and politics — without shady connections — to help make it happen.

Have you joined HDU? Start submitting posts about your faves or about current events. My goal is to welcome discussion on pop culture, politics and anything else, so until we establish more of an audience and voice, feel free to submit any type of post and see if it gets accepted.

I'd also like help creating posts, promoting the group and encouraging membership/comments. So if you're interested in helping with this, message me about getting involved as a mod.

I feel lame posting this because I'm not trying to make something with the impact ONTD had in its heyday. I just want to find a safe space to discuss pop culture and politics with others who are fun, sassy and #woke. Try to help me make that happen here — or comment with other forums and blogs you participate in. I'm open to either.

xoxo,

Kelly Clarkson shares video of her flopping in the studio

Kelly Clarkson is known for her powerful vocals, but she's no stranger to hitting a bum note — a fact evidenced by this video she shared on Facebook Monday evening. In the video, the legendary vocalist and "From Justin to Kelly" star doubles over with laughter after failing to hit a high note in the studio.

Kelly is hard at work recording her eighth studio album, which is due in June. According to the Daily Mail, Kelly has described KC8 as "my favorite album I've ever been a part of."

"It's literally the record I've been wanting to make since I was a kid," she said. "It encompasses all the things that I love — soulful R&B, urban, and pop — it's a fusion of all that."

ONTD HDU, are you excited for Kelly's new album?

BREAKING NEWS: Hilary Duff Can Still Walk

Despite a lack of reporting on the subject, recent photos reveal that actress/singer Hilary Duff hasn't lost her infamous walking skills! The 29 year-old mother was seen strutting her stuff on the set of her hit show "Younger." Season 4 of the TV Land series is currently in production and is set to air on the cable network in June.

tbh I mostly posted this for nostalgia. As a Hilary stan, I always loved her walking posts lol. I still need to get caught up on Younger!!

Russia, Livejournal and Homophobia

So it's not totally clear yet if any ONTD users are really going to move elsewhere en masse, but even if they did, I'm sure that the communities I'm trying to start are going to flop lol. Still, I thought I'd try my hand at starting to post some stuff, on the off chance new DW users see it. I figured it was only appropriate to make the first legit post in this community about the reason so many people are leaving LJ/ONTD in the first place...

In case you're unaware, Livejournal, the website that hosts ONTD, updated their user agreement recently. The new document had some pretty questionable language, which many are interpreting as homophobic, even going as far as saying the new terms make the website "subject to Russian internet laws."

As interpreted by the AV Club:
The new user agreement for the site was changed last week to incorporate the following adjustments: Agreements now prohibit “post[ing] advertising and/or political solicitation materials unless otherwise directly specified in a separate agreement between User and the Administration,” or “perform[ing] any other actions contradictory to the laws of the Russian Federation.” That’s language so vague and all-encompassing as to mean users can’t post any pro-LGBTQ text, or even talk about how, say, Vladimir Putin is a sadistic war criminal responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocents, and also a laughable buffoon who can’t even handle a joke about how he’s not the most virile man in the world.
Maybe those of us who are leaving LJ — and, in effect, ONTD — for other websites are being overdramatic. The language of the user agreement is fairly vague, after all. But looking at the latest news to come out of Russia, I'm not so sure... according to recent reports, Chechnya has opened what many are calling "concentration camps for homosexuals." PinkNews reports that more than 100 gay men have been detained in these facilities, where they've been tortured, beaten and even killed.

I hate to make the first post here so sad and serious, but it's something that needs to be talked about, especially considering LJ's updates to their user agreement. :/

Coming soon?

This is one of the ONTD alternatives I'm working on, since all the current pop culture communities (including the alt!ONTD) seem dead. Not sure if anyone is interested in building a community, but thought I'd throw a couple up and see what sticks.

If you want to help me develop and build a new community, PM me. :) In the meantime, feel free to join and submit posts and we can make up the rules as we go lol. There's this one and then Entertainment Weakly. Which one I focus on pm depends on what name ppl prefer lol.
